5 hot Nollywood babes to watch in 2012

Discovering new faces that will take after the likes of Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Ini Edo, Tonto Dike, Uche Jombo and many other A-list actresses when they finally stay off the screen over the years has remained a major issue as far as the Nigerian movie industry is concerned.

But today, with productions getting better and the industry gaining global attention, more and more faces are emerging, thus adding colour and freshness to the industry. HVP brings to you some of the new faces in Nollywood that are expected to become forces to reckon with in this new season.

Chinwe Isaac
Chinwe Isaac

Light skinned Chinwe Isaac is one fast rising actress that holds a lot of promises for the industry in this new season. Currently accused of taking after one of the most controversial actresses in Nollywood, Tonto Dike, after an extremely sexy role where she stuffed her breasts into an actor’s mouth in the movie titled “One Last Feeling”, the Imo State born actress who joined the industry in 2008, is not resting on her oar in respect of her determination to hit the top.

Industry watchers described Chinwe as one of the most sought after actresses by movie makers because of her daring attitude. Recently she shaved her hair for a new movie role, which she said she decided to play irrespective of the stigma that could come with walking about town on bald head, because she is driven by success and ability to take her craft a notch higher.

Chinwe who has starred in a couple of movies in the last four years made a name for herself in “Destitute”, a trilogy from the stable of Diamond Pictures, where she played her first major role.

A 300 level part time student of LASU, and a holder of a National Diploma in Music from the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Chinwe says her future is very bright in the industry. “Feeling fulfilled I’ve spent only three years in the industry, having joined in 2008. And since then, I have been working. I’m sure I’d make my mark soon.”

Ruth Kadiri
Ruth Kadiri

Sexy actress Ruth Kadiri is another emerging face to watch out for in Nollywood in this year. She is not only a promising actress but she is a scriptwriter.

An undergraduate of University of Lagos, Ruth last year wowed audience with her work as an actress cum scriptwriter in the movie titled “Ladies Men/ Ladies Gang.” She has been the toast of many fans of Nigerian movies in recent times.

Despite the grave allegation that made headlines last year that she was dumped by a popular producer, Stanley Ebonine for the love of his life, Dorathy Chinasa Agu, Ruth has remained focused and daring in the pursuit of her acting career. She believes that she will hit the tops this new season.

Uche Benjamin
Uche Benjamin

Uche Benjamin joined the industry two years ago, and already she has become a force to reckon with when you talk of emerging faces in Nollywood. A graduate of UNIPORT where she studied Biochemistry, Uche is today living her dream as an actress.

Her passion for acting started from childhood, which she has sustained till date. Currently, she is known for her roles in such movies as ‘Ego’, ‘Pains from the Heart’, ‘Adams Desire’, ‘Margaret Thatcher’, with ‘Everlasting Love’ being the movie which gave her, her break in the industry. Uche has what it takes to stand out in the industry as one of the emerging faces in Nollywood.

Beverly Naya
Beverly Naya

Ifunnanya Beverly, popularly known as Beverly Naya is described by many of her fans as the rave of the moment. She is currently enjoying a lot of attention as one of the emerging actresses in Nollywood. After relocating home from the UK two years ago, where she lived with her parents for almost 15 years. Beverly has become the darling of many movie bluffs in the country.

This sexy actress who has modeled and acted extensively in the UK and America, took Nollywood by storm after she played the female lead role in Lancelot Imasuen’s award-winning movie “Home In Exile.” She hosted the last ‘Mode Men Awards’ and featured in the star-studded ‘Weekend Getaway’ and “Alan Poza.”

The Ibuzo, Delta State born actress who studied Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy at the Brunel University, London, recently returned from Bayelsa, where she was part of the cast of a new epic movie titled ‘Up Creek Without A Paddle.’ Beverly no doubt is a promising actress to watch out for , in this new season.

Amanda Ebeye
Amanda Ebeye

Of all the pretty actresses currently on parade in Nollywood, Amanda Ebeye stands shoulder high among her peers. She is not only proficient and talented, she is equally endowed with brain and beauty. Many industry watchers described her as the “Nollywood star on the bloc.”

A graduate of International Studies and Diplomacy from the Benson Idahosa University, Benin, Amanda is gradually warming her way into the hearts of movie buffs with her impressive performance in movies and soap operas.

Ever since she debuted in the movie, “Weeping Tiger”, the ebony damsel from Agbor, in Delta State, has not looked back. She has delved into acting and has dumped the trade she studied in the university. Her role in the soap, “Clinic Matters” which is currently running on some television stations across the country is still the talk of the town.

Other movies where she featured in inlcuded “Last Weeding’, “Keep My Love” and “Tomorrow Must Wait”, “The Patriot”, More Than a Friend” ElDorado”. She also featured in such soaps as Super Story, Everyday People, City Sisters, Clinic Matters and Images.

Guy Ritchie "demanded" a lot of stunt work

Guy Ritchie "demanded" a lot of stunt work from the stars of 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows'.

The British director admits Jude Law, Noomi Rapace and Robert Downey Jr. -- who all appear in sleuth sequel -- were required to do a lot of hard work for the action-heavy movie and admits their individual exercise routines were gruelling.

He said: "Some of these action scenes would last for two weeks and these guys had to work eight or 10 hours a day repeating the same stunt. No one asks a professional athlete to do that amount of work and consequently Jude, Robert and Noomi were constantly on a diet, constantly on an exercising routine. The whole warm up would go on for an hour, cool down goes on for an hour and then they have 10 hours in between.

"That went on week after week. It is almost impossible to appreciate you want out of them physically. Never mind the other aspect, the physical aspect was very, very demanding."

However Jude -- who plays Dr. John Watson in the movie -- admits everyone returning from the 2009 movie was keen to do more stunts.

He told BANG Showbiz: "I think it's true to say though that the physical aspect of this film was another important element we wanted to push further. We were pushing the dialogue, we were pushing the banter, but we did all I think noticeably step up and say, 'Let's really elevate the physicality.'"

I Don't Need No Stinkin' Stuntman - Arnold Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger may be 64 years old, but he's still bad-ass enough to perform his own stunts ... well, except for the one he screwed up and got his head split open.

Arnold has been filming "Last Stand" in New Mexico for nearly two months. Sources on the set tell ET ... A.S. has politely declined the producers' offer to put stuntmen in the dangerous scenes, because he thinks it's just more believable for him to do it himself.

As for what Arnold is doing ... among other things, in one scene he's driving a Camaro, dragging a "bad guy behind" -- even though the scene involves crazy driving, it seems the bad guy is the one who needs a double.

Arnold is also doing a scene where he's suspended high above the ground by ropes -- we're told this scene is dangerous.

And side benefit -- we're told the production is so physically challenging, he's yolked again.

Aki tied the knot with his heartthrob Nneoma

Chinedu weds Nneoma
Nollywwod actor Chinedu Ikedieze better known as Aki and one half of the ‘Aki and Paw Paw’ duo on Saturday, November 26, 2011 tied the knot with his heartthrob Nneoma Nwaijah.

The traditional wedding took place at the bride’s home town in St. Theresa’s Catholic Church Primary School field, Obolo Isiala Mbano, Imo state.

As reported earlier, Aki who was conferred with an MFR National Honour in 2010  and Nneoma will walk down the aisle on December 10, 2011.

This Year's Oscar Season: Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen

Oscar 2011
There's one thing on which everybody in this year's Oscar race can agree: It's a wide-open year.

And, I’d like to add, a really annoying year.

Unlike, say, 2010, when "The Social Network" and "The King's Speech" seemed to be locked in a pitched battle for supremacy as early as September, this year's landscape is full of films that are liked but not loved, or movies that have been embraced but somehow don’t feel as if they can really win.

Maybe that'll change when "War Horse" or "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" begin screening for more people. (More likely, it won't.)

Also read: Oscar Voters Like 'The Descendants,' But Do They Love It?

But the unsettled nature of this year's race has already led to what strikes me as an unprecedented piling on, in which every movie that might have a shot at one of the top Oscars suddenly has an army of different consultants and publicists working overtime to make sure it seizes every bit of possible attention.

"It's desperation," said one veteran campaign strategist who agreed that this year is seeing an unusual number of additional hires, particularly on the "indie" side (i.e., the Weinsteins and Fox Searchlights of the world, rather than the major studios).

"Because there aren’t any clear-cut winners at this point, that people with the wherewithal are doing the typical Hollywood thing, which is to throw money at the problem. And the result is confusion and lack of focus."

Also read: How Do You Spell Relief, Oscars? B-I-L-L-Y

Hiring outside companies to run an Oscar campaign or supplement an in-house staff has been commonplace in awards races for more than a decade, since Miramax transformed the Oscar landscape in the 1990s. And some companies are doing no more than is traditional this time of year.

But my inbox has been filling up with examples of excess in recent weeks.

"The Artist," for instance, is having a Monday night screening at the Academy, hosted by Charlie Chaplin's granddaughters, Carmen and Dolores Chaplin. Since the screening was announced on Friday afternoon, I've gotten seven different emails soliciting my coverage from three different companies.

And while "The Artist" is one of the more aggressive players these days, it is far from alone in enlisting multiple consultants.

Also read: 'The Artist' Director, Star Break Their Silence at Wrap Screening

Fox Searchlight, which employs a large publicity staff, now has two other companies working on its top awards contenders, including "The Descendants" and "Shame." Other companies have in-house publicity staffs, outside Oscar-campaign specialists and third companies to work the theatrical releases (which happen to coincide with the Oscar campaign).

And the Best Picture craziness is echoed in the Animated Feature category, in which Pixar is usually the clear frontrunner. With that company's "Cars 2" not getting the critical approval of past Pixar efforts (a fact that was pointed out to me by a rival's publicist in the first example of opponent bad-mouthing I experienced this year), other companies in the mix are stepping up their efforts and bringing extra hands on deck.

I've dealt with three different people on DreamWorks Animation's entries; I got pitched "Rango" twice, from two different companies, even though I had already conducted interviews with principals from the film and had a story in the works.

Also read: Scorsese Unveils 'Hugo': A Shiny Ball of Cinematic Wonder

"There are definitely more cooks this year than ever," said Kris Tapley, the founder and editor of the Oscar site In Contention at Hitfix, who has been covering the Oscars closely for 11 years. "I think just more and more personal publicity companies are glomming onto every aspect of talent, and then you get a project with a bunch of people and their reps mixed with the studio reps, and it just builds and builds."

A longtime Oscar consultant who did not wish to be identified said that the thought process of the studios adding additional campaigners is simple: "If they get a nomination, they can say, 'We did this and that's why it happened,'" the consultant said. "And if they don't get a nomination, they can say, 'It's not our fault, because we threw everything we had at it.'

For me, all of this hit a tipping point a couple of weeks ago, transforming the feel of an Oscar season that until then hadn't felt nearly as crazy as the last couple of years. Coming at the same time that the Oscar production team exploded courtesy of Brett Ratner's intemperate mouth, it turned what had been a relatively calm season (at least by awards season standards) into a frantic free-for-all.

And I know it's far too late to turn back now, but I'd really like things to calm down for a while longer.

"The irony is that a well-structured, well-executed campaign does not require a large force," said the consultant. "It just needs somebody running it who knows what they're doing, who can strategize ads, events and screenings, and who knows the Academy.

"But there aren't a lot of those people out there, and bringing in larger forces often muddles things instead of helping them."

Saturday, November 19, 2011 Nollywood's cursed marriages: Kate Henshaw joins the list

If marriage is a diamond, then for majority of Nigerian actresses, finding that diamond is akin to looking for a needle in a haystack. Even among the lucky ones, many have discovered to their dismay that ‘‘diamonds are not forever”.
This poignant reality was recently reinforced by the shocking news that the marriage of Kate Henshaw-Nuttal, one of Nollywood’s top actresses, has hit the rocks. The Rivers of Tears actress, who turned 40 in July, called it quits with her 12-year old marriage to her British husband, Roderick James Nuttal. She told EE: “I have no comment on the issue. I have my daughter to think about.” The out-of-love couple is silently swotting in the background to effect a rancour-free and publicity-devoid divorce. For friends and fans of the star actress, and general observers of the Nigerian film industry, this latest development is sad and shocking.
What made the separation so repugnant is the fact that Kate Henshaw’s union used to be regarded as one of the few “working marriages” in the industry.

With the sad development, observers of the Nigerian film industry can’t shy away from the big question: Why is marriage such a cross for Nollywood stars? Earlier in August, another A-List actress, Mercy Johnson, got married under unwholesome circumstances that generated a deafening media noise.
Is marital failure in the movie industry such a big deal? After all, here and there, a slew of marital misadventures litter the corridors of Nollywood. However, when the facts and figures, the personas and personalities involved, are properly distilled, the disturbing result would make one jump to the conclusion that a ‘star marriage’ is jinxed. All it takes is a browse through the ‘Black Book’ of Nollywood marriages, to discover that not less than 25 top actresses had waded through the ‘marital swamp’ and came out divorced or separated.

Many reasons, one result
If every actress concerned were to narrate “My Failed Marriage Story,” the slants of individual experience will vary. Some unions were dissolved on the altar of infidelity. Eucharia Anunobi (Glamour Girls II) claimed she caught her husband and their housemaid on the couple’s matrimonial bed in a compromising position. The Face of a Liar star, Stella Damasus, in a reverse order was shown the red card by her 10-month-old second husband on an alleged sins of promiscuity, notably, a particular romp in London which was uncovered by a Lagos-based tabloid.
Other actresses were casualties of Runaway Husbands Syndrome (RHS). Representatives of this category include: Jennifer Eliogu who lost her five-year-old marriage to a Swiss lady, when her husband suddenly took a walk from their marriage. Stephnora Okere, whose ex husband, Lanre Falana wedded here in Nigeria and later abandoned for his London base without returning to their matrimonial home in Nigeria, again. Shan George, a veteran of three-crashed marriages, whose husbands No. 1 and No. 3 checked out of the union by ‘absconding’; the latter, a Nollywood producer, relocated to Germany. Oge Okoye and Chika Ike, are also top players in this category.
Other marriages were rendered asunder on account of domestic violence. Kiss and Tell actress, Monalisa Chinda is a renowned example of those inside the ‘domestic violence quadrant’. Beaten ‘blue and black’ by her hubby, she vacated her marital sanctuary in 2009 and has been living a more secured life of single parenthood.
Some actresses, who found themselves in the ‘offside position’ of the marital field, blamed the fiascos on “irreconcilable differences”; from  Fathia Balogun, (whose marriage to her second husband, fellow actor Saidi Balogun, hit the rocks in 2008) to Ayo Adesanya, (who reportedly packed out of her matrimonial home due to incompatibility and an unending battery and assault from her husband, Hassan Goriola) and Out of Bounds actress, Foluke Daramola (who jumped out of her crisis-plagued four-year-old marriage because of the trauma of domestic frictions).

The All Seasons Singles Club’
Still, the Nollywood marriage conundrum has yet another flipside: a seraglio of screen sirens stranded on the cusp between “in a relationship” and “inside a marriage” - not for lack of charms, nor for dearth of suitors. This bevy of beauties achieved fame and fortunes within our living memory. Some of them have spent a decade or more on the big screens. In a parallel world, as professionals in other fields other than acting – bankers, nurses or lawyers - they would all have been married. Every season, they remain spinsters, even though they ‘ride on chariots of blue-chip relationships’. The roll call include multiple award-winning Genevieve Nnaji, multi-talented Uche Jombo, and devil-may-care Uche Ogbodo. The trio of Rita Dominic, Funke Akindele and Benita Nzeribe also belong to the singles circle alongside Oby Edozieh. The ‘Spinster Squad’ also include famous beauties like: Lilian Bach, Bimbo Akintola, the one and only “Our Lady of Boobs”, Cossy Orjiakor. Queen of controversy, Empress Njamah, is also on the register.

The pass mark
On the balance sheet of Nollywood marriage, the credit side is lean. Marriages that are intact are few and still ‘green’ to be declared successful. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, whose 15-year-old marriage has produced four children, is the best known example. Then, there is mother-of-three-sons Omoni Oboli. The star of the award-winning Anchor Baby has sustained her marriage for 11 years. Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha has clocked five years in her marital sojourn. Ini Edo-Ehiagwina is in her third year. Dakore Akande has just experienced 10 months of marriage. A further four or five names can be added to the list and that is about the size of it. The “working marriages” still have the hurdle of 25-year silver benchmark ahead. To become a vintage marriage, they have to beat the Olu Jacob-Joke Silva test.

Breaking the riddle jinx
Sultry star actress, StephNora Okere, a casualty of a failed marriage, in an exclusive interview with EE recently, avows: “Broken marriage is not a Nollywood thing; it’s a society thing. But it is an anomaly, because this part of the world is quick to pick up vices from the western world; it’s part of the vices Third World countries are picking from the Americas of this world.”
Ngozi Nwosu, another victim of a failed marriage, who played the character of Peace in the popular television comedy series, Fuji House of Commotion, once provided an insight based on her personal experience:  “Suddenly, I became a star and he (her husband) grew uncomfortable with it. This was the genesis of our quarrel. He wasn’t at home with the attention I was getting”.
Bukky Wright, the twice-married, twice-divorced sexy actress also sang the same tune. “Nigerian men lack confidence, especially to manage successful women”, she once asserted.
Another victim, revered thespian, Clarion Chukwura, star of the 1984 Mirror in the Sun had a poignant perspective of what she called “marriages that don’t work”. Marriage, she opined, is a fusion of two minds on the platform of joyful co-existence, and when it goes awry, she averred, “Either of the parties should walk away instead of living in misery.”

Despite the gloom-doom aura surrounding ‘star marriage’ in the film industry, actresses still hold it in high esteem.  Those who are yet to marry talk about “marriage when it is right” or “marriage with Mr. Right”. Marrying right seems to be a jinx in Nollywood.

Jim Iyke N15 million Fraud

Controversial actor, Jim Iyke was on Thursday arraigned before an Abuja court for allegedly fleecing one Habiba Abubakar of the sum of N15 Millon. Abubarkar was said to have petitioned the Inspector general of Police on August 8, to investigate the fraud.

ENEBELI ELEBUWA STRUCK BY SUDDEN STROKE

These are definitely not the best of times for veteran actor, Enebeli Elebuwa who has been down with stroke for almost a month now.According to sources, the revered entertainer is currently admitted at the St. Luke’s Hospital, Sabo, Yaba, Lagos.

Professor Chinua Achebe, has again rejected the national award of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) awarded to him by the federal government.

Stakeholders in the Nigerian entertainment sector have reasons to celebrate as some of their own were proud recipients of prestigious national awards conferred on them by the President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on Sunday, November 13, 2011.

Those conferred the award of Member of the Federal Republic (MFR), include veteran actor, Olu Jacobs, actor turned politician, Kanayo O Kanayo, one-half of the ‘Aki and Pawpaw’ duo, Osita Iheme, producer and director, Amaka Igwe, and Nollywood divas Stephanie Okereke and Genevieve Nnaji.
Meanwhile, respected pioneer African novelist and renowned author of bestselling epic novel ‘Things Fall Apart’, Professor Chinua Achebe, has again rejected the national award of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) awarded to him by the federal government.

The professor of Africana studies at Brown University, United States, rejected the award on the ground that the concerns he raised when he first rejected the award in 2004 remain unresolved and it was ‘inappropriate’ for the government to offer him the award again.

According to a statement issued by the presidential media adviser, Dr. Reuben Abati, the Presidency has expressed regret that the eminent professor turned down the award, claiming that the professor’s assertion ‘flies in the face of reality’ especially as the situation in the country was much improved than when he first turned the award down.

It will be recalled that 81 year old Professor Achebe had earlier turned down the same award by the Olusegun Obasanjo government in 2004, lamenting the corroding influence of a certain ‘clique of renegades, openly boasting its connections in high places’, who seem ‘determined to turn my homeland into a bankrupt and lawless fiefdom. I am appalled by the brazenness of this clique and the silence, if not connivance, of the Presidency’.

The CFR is a prestigious national merit award conferred on individuals, by the government, who have rendered services to the benefit of the nation.
